The experimental documentary Life Cast portrays Tom Mayr in his work as a make-up artist, focussing on silicone prosthetics. Tom Mayr creates characters and fiction, but is not a filmmaker, does not see himself as an artist and feels comfortable in his position behind the scenes in the film industry. The camera accompanies him during the production of a silicone dummy, as Hansi‘s head is moulded and his young, mid-twenties self is transformed into the 60-year-old version of himself, christened Hans. Every step in the production process, from the construction of the mould to the precise insertion of the hair, is documented by the camera and artistically interpreted.
The result is the encounter between Hansi and Hans, while Tom, the creator of the work, stands by. Finally, the relationship between young and old becomes visible. Hansi‘s relationship with Hans is fictional, and so from this point onwards the cinematic means of the documentary film are also broken up with fictional means of composition.
